i-Tree Eco Training Workshop
May 16-17
Bartlett Laboratories, Charlotte, NC
The USDA Forest Service -Urban Forestry South office in Athens, GA; the Auburn University School of Forestry & Wildlife Sciences; and Bartlett Tree Laboratories is hosting an educational event May 16-17 to familiarize professionals in the field of urban forestry and planning with the i-Tree Eco tools that are available. i-Tree Eco is a detailed environmental services benefits model designed to be used to quanitfy the structure, environmental effects, and value of trees in entire urban and wildland-urban ecosystems. The Georgia Urban Forest Council, the Savannah Tree Foundation, and Trees South Carolina present Dr. Kim Coder of the University of Georgia; Arborist Michael Murphy of Beaufort, South Carolina; and City of Charleston Urban Forestry Superintendent Danny Burbage; tour some of Savannah's most historic live oaks, including the Candler Oak, the Majestic Oak, and the famous live oaks at the Wormsloe Historic Site, with talks by Savannah Forestry Adminstrator Bill Haws and staff along the way. Lunch is included.
5 ISA Arborist CEUs. 4.5 Category 1 SAF CFE credits. 2 GBCI CEUs.

Up by Roots Workshop
July 20, 2012
Gwinnett Technical College, Lawrenceville, GA
Jim Urban, FASLA, will present principles from his book, Up by Roots: Healthy Soils and Trees in the Built Environment. This event is designed to introduce key concepts used in site assessment and give attendees experience performing basic soil analyses. "Up By Roots" will focus on site assessment and plant selection and has applications in site development, landscape design, tree protection, and plant health care. Registration for the workshop is now open. Given the hands-on nature of this event, seating is limited so register now to ensure your participation.

New rules for outdoor water use went into effect on June 1, 2010.
WATER SMART!

  • Outdoor landscape irrigation is now allowed 7 days per week between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m.
  • Outdoor irrigation is not allowed between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. with the exception of the following uses:
  • Irrigation of personal food gardens
  • Irrigation of new and replanted plant, seed, or turf in landscapes, golf courses, or sports turf fields during installation and for a period of 30 days immediately following the date of installation
  • Drip irrigation or irrigation using soaker hoses
  • Hand-watering with a hose with automatic cutoff or handheld container
  • Irrigation of horticultural crops held for sale, resale, or installation
  • Use of water withdrawn from private water wells or surface water
  • Irrigation of athletic fields, golf courses, or public turf grass recreational areas
  • Installation, maintenance, or calibration of irrigation systems
  • Hydro-seeding
  • Commercial agricultural operations
  • Capture and reuse of cooling system condensate or storm water in compliance with applicable local ordinances and state guidelines
  • Reuse of gray water in compliance with Code
  • Use of reclaimed waste water by a designated user from a system permitted by the Environmental Protection Division of the department to provide reclaimed waste water (from GGIA)
